Uh oh, this little bee has gone to pieces! Can your little learners help put them back together?

This cut and paste bee puzzle is easy to prepare (just print off and grab some scissors and glue) and can help your children develop those important fine motor and problem solving skills.

Although puzzles like this may seem simple to us, there’s actually a lot of skills that are needed to solve a puzzle like this.

Firstly, they’ll have to have decent cutting skills to be able to cut the pieces out neatly enough that they line up when placed on the grid (you may need to help them with this though if they find it tricky at first).

Once the pieces are cut out neatly, they’ll have to work out how to maneuver the different pieces so that they all go together to correctly make the picture.

There’s two difficulties, one with the bee outline so your children can see how it should look and one without – if they’re using the harder version, then they may have to use their imagination, memory, or a bit of both, to think about what the final picture should like.

They’ll then have to have good fine motor skills to be able to place and stick the different pieces to the grid correctly.

Here’s a fun bit of trivia to share while they work: honey bees beat their wings around 200 times every second!

When using this cute bee puzzle, your children will have the chance to practice and develop skills such as:

  • Fine motor skills – they will have to use a good pincer grip to pick up the puzzle pieces and place them in the right place
  • Hand-eye coordination – to ensure they can move and line up the pieces
  • Cutting and sticking – they’ll need good cutting and sticking skills to carefully cut out the puzzle pieces and arrange them correctly on the grid
  • Problem solving – they’ll have to work out how to put the puzzle together correctly using their problem solving skills. Will they work methodically, one piece at a time until they’re happy it looks right? Will they arrange the pieces on the table first before sticking it down? Will they use trial and error to see what works?
  • Shape And Geometry – being able to rotate the pieces and understanding how the different parts of the bee go together to create the whole picture
  • Patience – they may have to try lots of configurations before they get all the pieces lined up correctly

Here are some other ways to deepen the experience depending on your kiddo:

Color It In First

If you’ve printed the black and white version, hand it over with crayons or markers before any cutting happens. Coloring in the bee adds a calming opener to the activity, builds pencil control and gives kids a chance to make this little bee uniquely theirs – do they want a rainbow bee? sparkly purple? Whatever they go with, I’m sure it will be bee-autiful!

Talk Like a Bee Detective

While they sort the pieces, narrate what you see and ask open-ended questions. “Which piece has the antenna? How can you tell which way it goes? What’s on the bottom of this one?” Positional language like above, below, next to, and between slips in naturally and is super for some early language development.

Tweezer Challenge

For an extra fine motor workout, ask your kids to pick up and place each piece using tweezers, tongs, or chopsticks before sticking it down. Adding a little hand muscle workout.

Laminate and Reuse

Pop the cut-out pieces and the grid part through a laminator, then use them as a reusable puzzle.

Bee Body Parts

Use the rebuilt bee as an anchor for a quick mini-lesson on insect anatomy. Can they spot the head, wings and antennae? It’s a lovely cross-curricular bridge from a simple worksheet into some early science vocabulary.

Pair It with a Bee Story

Read a favorite bee picture book before or after the puzzle. The puzzle suddenly feels like a tiny extension of the story, and pairing reading with a hands-on follow-up helps the new vocabulary stick. My little ones did really enjoy Bumble Bear by Nadia Shireen if you haven’t read it yet!

However your little ones tackle this buzzy bee puzzle, I hope you have lots of fun rebuilding it together! Enjoy and let’s nurture those neurons!
