Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Not your little learners once they’ve made this one. This printable build a wolf craft creates the friendliest wolf in the woods!

There’s a pre-colored template for quick crafting and a black and white version for kiddos who’d rather pick their own colors, so it’s a lovely low-prep activity for home or the classroom.

Here’s a fun one to share while you work: when a pack of wolves howls together, the sound can carry for around ten miles. Each pack even has its own unique howl, so your little ones might need to invent one too!

And if your little learners have already made our build a fox craft, this wolf makes a perfect woodland companion.

What Skills Can Your Children Learn And Practice?

When making this wolf, your children will have the chance to practice and develop some skills such as:

  • Cutting Skills – if you feel they’re ready, you can let them have a go at cutting out the pieces all by themselves – they’ll need to be careful and have good scissor control if they want to cut out the pieces neatly
  • Fine Motor Skills – when they’re sticking and picking up and moving the parts and placing them where they need to go
  • Hand-Eye Coordination – lining up the pieces takes steady visual tracking and careful hand control.
  • Pencil Control – if you print off the black and white version they can practice their pencil control and develop hand strength through coloring.

This simple craft will also give them a chance to practice their concentration and perseverance skills as they may find it tricky to place the pieces exactly where they want them to go.

How To Prepare This Simple Wolf Craft

First you’re going to want to download the wolf templates by clicking on the download button at the bottom of the page – I’ve made a color and a black and white version.

Other materials you’ll need:

  • Safety scissors
  • Card stock or Craft paper
  • Some good glue
  • Some coloring pencils or pens or other artsy materials

Once you’ve downloaded the templates, you’ll need to print them off onto paper or card.

Then, you can cut them out. Or if you’d like your children to get some cutting practice, you can let them have a go.

Then you can stick all the pieces together to make the little canine.

It can be really nice to let your kids have a bit of free rein here and see if they can work it out – kind of like a puzzle.

If they’re struggling, the order I’d do it in is:

  1. Stick the ears on the head
  2. Stick the head on to the body
  3. Stick the front paws on
  4. Stick the legs to the back of the body
  5. Stick the tail on

(I expect you could have worked that out but I do like to be thorough…)

The finished one should look something like this:

If you want to, you could always laminate the pieces before putting them together and use them as a puzzle. That way, the different parts would be kept nice and they can use them again and again.

After that you’re all done!

Let your kids practice their cutting and sticking skills in a simple and fun way!

But Wait… There’s Also A Black And White Wolf Template!

I’ve also made a black and white version which would be an awesome way for your little ones to practice their coloring skills and personalize their creature in their own way!

So why not crack out the pens, crayons, paints or collage (or all of them if you’re feeling adventurous) and let your kids get creative!

Some Other Ways You Could Use This Wolf Activity

Don’t put it away just yet – this little wolf has plenty more to give…

Make a Reusable Wolf Puzzle

Laminate the pieces before they’re stuck together and you’ve got a build-it-again puzzle your little ones can take apart and rebuild as often as they like. Mix in pieces from our other cut and paste crafts and they can invent some truly wonderful creatures (a wolf with owl wings, anyone?).

Wolf Puppet

Tape a craft stick to the back of the finished wolf and you’ve got an instant puppet for retelling The Three Little Pigs or Little Red Riding Hood. For older kids, why not flip the story around? Read The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! by Jon Scieszka as a mentor text, then ask your little ones whether the wolf is really so bad after all. It’s a lovely way to explore different points of view through dramatic play.

Build a Forest Pack

Turn everyone’s wolves into a pack on a class display. Paint or collage a simple forest background, then have each child add their wolf. Use the display for a bit of counting (“How many wolves are in our pack?”) and positional language (“Which wolf is hiding behind the tree? Who’s next to the rock?”).

Tell Me About Your Wolf

Ask your little ones to give their wolf a name and tell you all about it. What does it eat? Where does it sleep? What does its howl sound like? Emerging writers can label their wolf or copy a simple sentence, and you can keep the cutting going with our cut and stick sentence builder – type in “My wolf can howl” and let them cut out the words and put the sentence back in order.

Celebrate Wolf Awareness Week

Wolf Awareness Week falls in the third week of October each year (October 18-24 in 2026), so it’s the perfect time to bring out the pack. Share the howling fact from above, talk about where wolves live and why they matter in the wild, and you’ll find plenty more dates to plan around in our Special Day Calendar.

However your little ones use thsi, I hope you have fun making this woodland wolf together! And if they’re hungry for more forest friends, there’s plenty more to explore in our woodland animal printables.

Enjoy and let’s nurture those neurons!
