Looking for a fun, hands-on way for your little builders to practice their phonics skills? Then look no further than this cool construction CVC game!
CVC stands for consonant – vowel – consonant, and CVC words are easy words that your children will be able to sound out and blend as they begin to learn to read.
There’s 36 CVC words for your little learners to practice spelling and they are:
Pan, bag, fox, dog, cat, bat, bus, pin, pen, log, rod, mat, hen, van, man, sun, jam, hat, six, can, ten, bed, web, net, pig, fan, cog, box, cup, fin, lab, leg, rat, red, peg and jab.
To play this fall phonics game, your little ones will need to take one of the CVC crates from the pile and place it hanging from the crane, they will then need to segment the word before choosing the correct letter crates and placing them in the right order on the ground! A lot to think about and a lot of skills to practice!
And if you haven’t checked it out yet, you might also like our awesome phonics word card maker. It’s a tool I’m very proud of that can automatically add sound buttons to words. These can be a great resource when helping teach your little ones to read!
What Skills Can Your Little Ones Learn And Develop?

This construction CVC game is designed to help your children practice and develop their early reading and writing skills, such as:
- Segmenting – the ability to breakdown and hear each sound in a word
- Sounding out – saying the different sounds that the written letters make, one sound at a time
- Blending – the ability to ‘blend’ the different sounds of a word together to be able to correctly say the word
- Letter recognition – being able to recognize the letters and knowing what sounds they make
- Letter formation – if they practice tracing the letters with their fingers or writing them out after they have completed the puzzle
- Fine Motor Skills – when they’re picking up and moving the parts and placing them where they need to go
A lot of these are important skills taught during phonics lessons and can help your children take some of their first steps on the path to becoming fluent readers.

How To Use This Construction Phonics Center Activity

There’s a few different ways you can use this game with your children depending on their reading and writing ability and which skills they need to develop.
The main way to play this game is to place a picture crate hanging from the crane and see if your child can correctly identify the sounds that make up the word, then use their letter recognition skills to select the correct crate letters and place them in the correct order on the ground.
To make this a little easier, you may want to just start with the letters of the sign you are using and see if they can order them correctly, before mixing letters from other words as well.
You could also do it the other way and place the letters on the ground – for example ‘dog’ – then see if your child can read it and choose the crate with the dog picture.
If you want to get them to practice theirs letter formation skills, you could also place the CVC crates on a blank piece of paper and see if they can correctly write the word below – you could always place the letters next to it for them to use as a guide.
