About the Roll and Write Worksheet Generator

This Roll and Write Worksheet Generator helps you create simple, dice-based writing worksheets in seconds.

You type in 6 items you want (one for each dice number – could be words, letters or numbers), choose how many writing rows you want, and print an awesome writing sheet that’s ready to go.

You can type your own words (perfect for custom spelling lists, phonics graphemes, or sight words), or use our built-in word lists.

You can also use it for numbers if you’d like a quick number formation warm-up.

The layout stays consistent for your kids (roll → find → write), while you can swap the focus anytime.

Why Roll and Write?

Roll and write works because it turns something repetitive into something that feels like a game.

Your children will still get lots of practice but the dice roll adds some randomness and keeps them engaged for longer than a standard “write this 10 times” worksheet.

Once your little learners know the routine, they can get started with very little support -which makes it great for busy classroom moments and quick home practice.

Why This Tool Is Awesome

This generator keeps things simple (in the good way).

You can choose 3–7 times to write for each word, so it works for quick warm-ups or longer practice. The word is shown clearly at the top of each column, so children always have a model to copy from—great for independence.

Just like our sight word worksheet maker, this also has some of the most popular word banks ready to use.

Race Mode turns the worksheet into a quick game: children race to complete all six columns first. It’s ideal for partners, small groups or a race against the clock.

Rainbow Write Mode makes practice more fun by assigning each writing row a color they’ll need to use.

How To Use

Create a print-ready roll and write worksheet in just a few steps. Here’s everything you need to know:

Step 1 – Give Your Worksheet a Title

Type a title into the Worksheet Title box at the top. If you leave it blank, the title will be hidden on the printed worksheet. Please keep this under 45 characters so it fits neatly on the page.

Step 2 – Choose Your Words

Pick how you’d like to add words to the dice using the buttons at the top.

Enter my own – type a word into each of the six dice fields. Each word can be up to 12 characters long. This is great when you want to use your own spelling list, topic vocabulary, or tricky words you’re working on in class.

Use a word bank – choose a word bank and level from the dropdowns, then click Choose 6 words for me. Six words will be picked at random from that list and shown as a preview. If you’re not happy with the selection, click Re-pick words to get a new set.

Step 3 – Choose How Many Times to Write

Use the Times to write selector to set how many rows each word gets – anywhere from 3 to 7. Five is the default and works well for most learners.

Step 4 – Colors

Use the color pickers to personalize the look of your worksheet.

Border and Lines – changes the color of the page border, grid lines, and dice.

Title – changes the color of the worksheet title text.

Click the colored square to open the color picker.

Step 5 – Options

Race mode – changes the instructions so learners color in the dice at the top of a column once they’ve finished writing that word the required number of times. First to finish all six columns wins! Great for pair or small group work.

Rainbow write mode – adds a colored strip down the left side of the grid, with each row in a different rainbow color. Learners roll the dice and write the word in whichever color row comes next. Times to write is locked to 7 in this mode to match the seven rainbow colors.

Show writing lines – adds a guide line inside each writing cell to help your little learners keep their letters neat and consistent.

Dice style – choose between Pips (traditional dots) or Numbers depending on what your learners are most familiar with.

Step 6 – Generate and Download

Hit the Generate Worksheet button when you’re happy with your settings. Then click Download Worksheet to save your print-ready PDF. It downloads instantly, ready to print at home or at school.

FAQ

A Roll and Write worksheet is a simple dice game that turns writing practice into a quick, repeatable activity. Children roll a dice, find the matching column, and write the word on the worksheet. It’s a fun way to practice spelling, phonics, sight words, and handwriting.

This Roll and Write activity works well for preschool, pre-k, kindergarten, and early elementary (roughly ages 3–8), depending on the words you choose. Use short CVC words or simple high-frequency words for younger learners, and longer spelling words or vocabulary words for older children.

You can use it to create printable writing practice sheets for:

  • Sight words / high-frequency words

  • Tricky words

  • Spelling lists

  • Phonics patterns (CVC words, digraphs, blends, magic e, vowel teams)

  • Vocabulary practice

  • Name writing

Because you choose the words, it’s easy to match what you’re teaching that week.

Each worksheet uses six words, one for each dice number (1–6).

You can choose 3-7 times to write for each word. If you turn on Rainbow Write Mode, the worksheet automatically switches to 7 writes (so each color row gets used).

Rainbow Write Mode adds colored writing rows so children write in a different color row each time. It’s a great option for learners who need extra motivation, and it works really well for sight word practice, phonics words, or spelling words that benefit from repetition.

Race Mode turns the worksheet into a partner, small-group or race against the clock game. Children roll the dice and write the word until they complete each column. Once a column is finished, they can color in the dice box at the top (or you can use a marker/check mark). First to color all 6 dice wins. It’s a fun way to build writing fluency and automaticity.

Yes it’s ideal for phonics. Add words that match the skill you’re teaching, like:

  • CVC words (cat, pin, sun)

  • Digraph words (ship, chat, thin)

  • Blends (stop, frog, clap)

  • Magic e (cake, bike, home)

  • Vowel teams (rain, boat, seed)

  • Individual sounds (a, sh, igh)

This kind of repeated writing helps children connect sounds to spelling patterns and strengthens word recognition.

Absolutely. Roll and Write is a great way to practice sight words, high-frequency words, and tricky words, because it builds repeated exposure and helps children remember correct spelling through frequent practice. We even have some built in word banks to help!

Yes, it’s perfect for both. Teachers often use Roll and Write worksheets as:

  • Morning work

  • Fast finisher tasks

  • Literacy centers

  • Small group spelling practice

  • Independent word work

  • Interventions and Catch ups

It’s low-prep, easy to explain, and children can usually do it independently after the first go.

Definitely. Parents love it for short, consistent practice that doesn’t feel overwhelming. It works well for:

  • Weekly spelling words

  • Homework routines

  • Quick handwriting practice

  • “Just 5 minutes” literacy practice

Nope, just a printer, paper, and a dice (and colored pencils if you want to use rainbow write mode). If you don’t have a dice, you can use a dice app, number cards, or write 1–6 on slips of paper and pick one randomly.
