This Roll and Trace Worksheet Generator helps you create simple, dice-based tracing worksheets in seconds.
You type in 6 items you want (one for each dice number – could be words, letters or numbers), choose how many tracing rows you want, and print an awesome tracing sheet that’s ready to go.
It’s perfect for sight words, high-frequency words, spelling words, and phonics graphemes (letters, digraphs, trigraphs).
You can also use it for numbers if you’d like a quick number formation warm-up.
The layout stays consistent for your kids (roll → find → trace), while you can swap the focus anytime.
Roll and trace works because it turns something repetitive into something that feels like a game.
Your children will still get lots of practice but the dice roll adds a little surprise and keeps them engaged for longer than a standard “trace this 10 times” worksheet.
Once your little learners know the routine, they can get started with very little support -which makes it great for busy classroom moments and quick home practice.
The main focus here is speed and flexibility. You get make an awesome worksheet quickly and tailor it to exactly what they need right now.
If you want a classic approach, you can keep it simple: roll, trace, repeat. If you want more variety, you can shuffle the entries so the practice feels less repetitive while still sticking to the same six focus items.
There’s also Race Mode which adds a fun little challenge: children work through a column and then cross off or color in the dice at the top when they’ve finished that number. They could do it against someone else or against a timer.
And Rainbow Write Mode, where your children will need to trace each row using the matching color.

Oh and I hope you notice the lovely font. That’s our own Early Readers font, that has been specially designed to keep the letters clear and simple!

In the classroom, these worksheets work beautifully as morning work, at your literacy stations, phonics centers, and warm ups and early finisher tasks.
They’re also handy for catch ups and interventions, because you can target just six tricky focus items and give students repeated practice without changing the activity.
At home, it’s a simple routine that doesn’t require a big setup. Parents can use it as a quick 5 – 10 minute practice after school, or as a calm activity.
You can also switch the focus to match what you’re working on:
Letters / digraphs / trigraphs for phonics (like sh, ch, th, igh, air)
Single numbers for number formation practice
Tricky words / sight words for quick daily repetition
Create a print-ready roll and trace worksheet in just a few steps. Here’s everything you need to know:
Type a title into the Worksheet Title box at the top. It defaults to “Roll and Trace” if you leave it blank. Please keep it under 45 characters so it all fits neatly on the page.
Pick how you’d like to add words.
Use the Word layout selector to control how the words are arranged in the grid.
Use the ‘Times to trace’ selector to set how many rows each word gets – anywhere from 3 to 8. Fewer rows gives you larger, clearer text that’s easier to trace. Five is the default and works well for most learners.
Use the color pickers to personalize the look of your worksheet.
Click the colored square to open the color picker.
Hit the Generate Worksheet button when you’re happy with your settings. Then click Download Worksheet to save your print-ready PDF. It downloads instantly, ready to print at home or at school.
Click Make Another to reset the tool and start fresh with a new worksheet.
Happy tracing!

A Roll and Trace worksheet is a simple dice activity: children roll a die, find the matching column, and trace the word underneath. It’s a fun way to build subitizing, handwriting, fine motor control, and word recognition through repeated practice.
This printable roll and trace worksheet generator is great for teachers, homeschool parents, tutors, and early years educators working with preschool, kindergarten, and first/second grade learners and any other students who still need some extra support.
Roll-and-trace activities are especially helpful for:
Handwriting practice (letter formation and control)
Fine motor skills and pencil control and stamina
Sight word recognition and automaticity
Yes. You can enter sight words, high-frequency words, tricky words, phonics words, spelling words, or theme vocabulary words – anything that fits the word length limit.
You’ll enter 6 words (one for each dice number). The worksheet then repeats those words down the page based on your chosen number of tracing rows.
You can choose 3 to 8 tracing rows (the default is 5).
Repeat: Each dice number always has the same word (classic dice roll and trace format).
Shuffle: Your 6 words are mixed across the grid for extra variety—still using only the words you entered.
Rainbow Mode adds a rainbow color to each row and sets the sheet to 7 tracing rows. Children will then need to trace in the correct color for each row.
Race Mode turns it into a quick classroom game or independent challenge against the clock: children cross off a dice when they finish tracing that entire column. It’s a fun option for partners or small groups.
Yes. You can pick one worksheet color that updates the page border, title, table lines, and dice.
Yep. The routine is consistent so once they know what’s happening, it’s easy to use for independent work, small groups, early finishers, or quick homework sheets.
