This interactive online Alien Word Generator creates printable nonsense word flashcards, word lists, and reading checklists for phonics practice across Phases 2–5, making it perfect for Kindergarten through Grade 2. Choose your target graphemes and consonant blends, optionally highlight the focus sound in a custom color, pick your card size and layout, then download a ready-to-print PDF in seconds.
If you’re looking for an easy way to whip up some alien words (also called nonsense words or pseudo words) for phonics practice, this Alien Word Generator has you covered.
It creates decodable alien word flashcards, alien word lists, and reading checklists using the graphemes your learners are working on. This makes it ideal for screening, small-group work, phonics games and quick checks of the sound you’re working on.
Alien, pseudo or nonsense words are made-up (or ridiculously infrequent) but completely decodable words, such as baf, shom or splax.
Because children can’t have memorized them, they have to rely on their phonics knowledge to read them.
This means sounding out and blending the graphemes instead of guessing from memory of its overall shape – so they’re a great way to check if your child actually knows that sound!
In research and official guidance they’re usually called pseudo words, and they’re used in many assessments like the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, which mixes real words with pseudo words to see how securely children can decode.

This tool lets you create printable alien word flashcards and alien word lists that match the phonics you’re teaching:
Choose Phase 2–5 style graphemes and consonant blends, then generate tailored alien flashcards and nonsense word lists for phonics practice and assessment.
Print three different layouts:
Alien word flashcards (small, medium, or large sizes)
Simple alien word lists
Reading checklists with tick boxes
Optionally highlight the target sound on the flashcards (for example all the ai or str in your words) to focus your learners’ attention on the pattern.
Or switch to “use my own words” to turn your own nonsense words into matching flashcards or lists in seconds.
You can use these alien word flashcards and nonsense word lists for phonics screening practice, independent decoding stations, quick-check reading activities, or fun whole-class games. As you can choose and highlight exactly the graphemes you’re using, you can keep the focus exactly where you need it.
A quick note about alien words
We’ve done our best to avoid any rude, offensive, or inappropriate combinations in these alien/nonsense word banks.
However, as I’m sure you can understand, it’s impossible for us to know every potentially offensive word in every language, or how meanings might change over time.
Because these are made-up “alien” words, please quickly scan the list or flashcards before using them with your little learners, and only use the ones you’re happy with!

Oh and I hope you notice the lovely font. That’s our own Early Readers font, that has been specially designed to keep the letters clear and simple!
Well, I think that about covers it.
Follow the instructions below to generate your own nonsense word cards!
And if you find it useful, to help get the word out could you please give it a little share or tell someone who you think would find it useful. Thanks!
Create decodable nonsense words for phonics practice and screening prep. I wanted to make the best alien word maker I could, so there’s quite a few options for you to tailor it exactly as you want!
At the top of the controls panel, pick how you’d like your alien words to be created.
Select the phase your little learners are working on – Phase 2, 3, 4, or 5. This controls which graphemes and blends appear in the generated words.
By default the tool uses all sounds for that phase. If you’d like to focus on a specific grapheme, click Choose specific sounds and click on the sounds you want to use. Select as many or as few as you like.
Use the dropdown to choose how many alien words to generate.
Turn on Highlight chosen sound in each alien word to color the target grapheme in every word. This is great for drawing your little learners’ attention to the specific sound pattern you’re focusing on.
This option works best when you’ve chosen specific sounds in Step 2, so the tool knows exactly which grapheme to color.
Choose your flashcard size – Small (10 per page), Medium (5 per page), or Large (2 per landscape page). Then pick your border color and word color using the color pickers.
Hit Generate Alien Words and your set will appear in the preview panel below.
Not happy with the set? Click Try New Set to generate a fresh batch with the same settings – no need to scroll back up or change anything.
Once you’re happy with the set, grab any or all of the three downloads.
Click Make Another to reset the tool and start fresh. All settings return to their defaults ready for your next set.
Hope your little learners enjoy the decoding challenge!
The printed nonsense word cards should look something like this:

If you can’t see the nonsense word flash card maker – it’s probably because you’re on a mobile device. You can try switching your device to landscape mode or if that doesn’t work, try again on a PC or laptop.

Alien, pseudo, or nonsense words are made-up (or very rarely used) but completely decodable words like baf, shom, or splax. Because children can’t have seen them before, they have to use their phonics knowledge to read them rather than relying on memory. That makes them a great way to check whether your little learners have really internalized a sound.
The generator covers Phases 2, 3, 4, and 5. The phase you select controls which graphemes and consonant blends will appear in your nonsense words. You can either use all sounds for the selected phase or hand-pick exactly the graphemes you want.
You can print three different layouts: alien word flashcards (in small, medium, or large sizes), simple numbered word lists, and reading checklists with tick boxes for quick reading checks.
There are three flashcard sizes to choose from: small (10 cards per page, two columns and five rows in portrait), medium (5 cards per page, one column in portrait), and large (2 cards per page in landscape).
Yes! Switch to “Use my own alien words,” and a text box will appear. Type or paste your words one per line and the tool will turn them into matching flashcards, word lists, or reading checklists just as it would with generated words.
When you tick “Highlight chosen sound in each alien word,” the target grapheme is visually emphasized on the flashcards in a color of your choice. This draws your learners’ attention directly to the phonics pattern being practiced. The highlight applies to flashcards only — word lists and reading checklists stay as plain text.
You can generate between 10 and 40 words per PDF.
The tool downloads a PDF, which you can print straight away for classroom or home use.
The tool is designed to work on a PC or laptop. If you’re on a mobile device, try switching to landscape mode first. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to access it on a PC or laptop for the full experience.
