Your little learners will need to carefully count the cute critters, add the amounts together, then find the piece with the correct number on to complete the puzzle.

There’s two puzzles for each number from 2 – 10 in the pack.

What Skills Can Your Little Ones Learn And Develop?

These forest themed adding puzzles are designed to help your children practice and develop some early skills, such as:

• One to one correspondence – this important skill (trickier than you may think) is the ability to only touch and count an object of a set once.
• Adding – adding two amounts together to find the total
• Number recognition – they’ll need to be able to recognize the numbers to fiend the correct answer piece
• Fine motor skills – as they pick up and move the pieces
• Hand-eye coordination – to ensure they can move and line up the pieces
• Problem solving – they’ll have to work out how to put the puzzle together correctly using their problem solving skills. 

How To Prepare These Woodland Animal Addition Puzzles To 10

You’ll then need to cut out the puzzles and you can laminate them if you want them to last longer.

Your little learners’ goal is to carefully count the animals, add them together and find the correct number piece.

They could do this by counting each set first, saying each number as they do, then count all of them to find the total.

Saying a nice number sentence here can be a great way to verbally consolidate their learning.

For example,

• (count one side of the equation) “There’s 5 frogs here, add”,
• (count the other side) “these 5 frogs”,
• (then count them all together) “equals 10 frogs”.

Remind them to only count each item once and that the last number they say is the total.

Then they just need to use their number recognition skills to find the missing piece.

Some Ways You Could Use These Addition Puzzles…

Set these up as a self-directed maths station. Your learners can choose a puzzle, solve it, and move on at their own pace – perfect for some independent or small-group work.

Maths Warm-Up

Use a few puzzles as a gentle warm-up before a whole-group maths lesson. Let your children talk through how they counted and added the animals together.

Cut-and-Solve Activity

Give your learners the chance to cut out some of the puzzles first. Then mix them up before solving. This could add a little extra fine motor boost!

Story-Based Learning

Ask your children to make up a short story for each puzzle: “Three squirrels were in the forest, then two more joined them…” This helps connect maths with early language and storytelling.

However you use them, gently encourage them if they find it a little tricky at first – learning all these new skills takes time!
