CVC stands for consonant – vowel – consonant, and CVC words are easy words that your children will be able to sound out and blend as they begin to learn to read.
This pack contains 26 different CVC word and picture puzzles.
These puzzles are great for improving phonemic awareness and getting your children to really start thinking about each sound in a word.
The puzzles will help them to segment the words into their beginning, middle and end sounds which is a crucial early skill for both reading and writing!
What Skills Can Your Little Ones Learn And Develop?
These CVC word puzzles are designed to help your children practice and develop their early reading skills, such as:
- Segmenting – this is the ability to break down and hear each sound in a word.
- Sounding out – this is saying the different sounds that the written letters make, one sound at a time.
- Blending – the ability to put the different sounds of a word together to be able to correctly say the word.
- Letter recognition – recognizing the written form of the letters
- Letter formation – understanding what the letters look like and how to write them (if you use the idea at the bottom of the page)
These are important skills taught during phonics lessons and help your children take some of their first steps on the path to becoming fluent readers.

How To Use These CVC Cards
There’s a few different ways you can use this phonics printable with your children depending on their reading and writing ability and which skills they need to develop.
This one’s pretty straight forward, cut out the puzzles into their 3 parts and place them onto the table. You may want to just use one puzzle at a time or mix some up if you think they’re confident enough.
Then your little learners will just need to put the puzzles back together again saying each sound and blending the word as they do so.
CVC Writing Practice
For this one you’ll need to print off a copy but cut off the bottom part with the letters. Your children will then need to put the pieces together to complete the picture. Then they can segment the word into its sounds and write the letters below the puzzle.
And another way you can use these cards are as flash cards for your children to practice sounding out and blending.
For this you may want to cover the picture and get your little ones to read the letters below. Then, its time for the big reveal to see if they got it right!
You could also turn this into a ‘keep it’ game. If they get it right, they get to keep it, if not, it goes back to the bottom of the pile. Keep going until they’ve got them all.
I hope they enjoy using these simple CVC puzzles – download them below.
