If you’re teaching early phonics and you’re tired of drawing dots and dashes by hand, this Phonics Worksheet Generator is for you!

You can type in a phonics-friendly caption, and it will automatically add sound buttons (dots, dashes and split-digraph arcs) under each word, ready for your children to segment and blend.

Then just print the worksheet so they can read the caption and draw a matching picture in the box.

With this phonics caption maker you can:

  • Choose single-caption landscape or two-caption portrait layouts.

  • Type your own short captions (up to 40 characters) to go with your children are learning about at the moment.

  • Automatically generate sound buttons under each word, including lots of digraphs, trigraphs and split digraphs.

  • Click words to mark them as tricky – the sound buttons disappear and the word changes to whatever color you have chosen.

This kind of phonics caption worksheet can support a whole mix of early literacy skills, such as:

  • Segmenting and blending using sound buttons.

  • Grapheme – phoneme correspondence, as they recognize letters and spot those digraphs and trigraphs.

  • Reading fluency and confidence, as children practice short, fully decodable captions.

  • Comprehension, as they read the caption and decide what to draw.

  • Fine motor and pencil control, when they’re drawing their adorable pictures!

So, whether you’re teaching a whole-class phonics session, running a small intervention group, or want to teach your little ones at home, this tool makes it quick and easy to create bespoke phonics read-and-draw worksheets that match exactly what you’re teaching right now.

Sound Buttons – A short Intro

If you’re unfamiliar with sound buttons, they are small circles or dashes normally placed beneath letters in a word to help children break down and blend sounds more easily.

When a child touches a sound button, they practice saying that sound aloud, reinforcing their understanding of phonics. Moving along from left to right, touching each sound button and saying each sound as they go.

Sound buttons can play a very important role in early reading, helping children to more easily see how a word is broken down into its individual sounds.

For example, in the word “armchair,” each sound – ar, m, ch, air – is marked with a dot or dash, indicating whether it’s a single letter sound or a digraph (two letters making one sound) or trigraph (three letters making one sound).

These visual cues helps children recognize each phonetic part of the word, helping them to read it more fluently.

Why This Sound Button Generator for Phonics Captions is Awesome

This tool is aimed at those just starting their reading journey or those that need a little more help with the fundamentals. It won’t do all the possible sounds but is great for most up to phase 5. I hope you like using it – this is some of why I think it’s great:

  • You can match exactly what you’re teaching
Instead of hunting for pre-made worksheets that are “almost right”, you just type your own captions to fit today’s phonics focus, reading book, or topic.

  • Sound buttons appear like magic (without faffing in Word)
The tool automatically adds dots, dashes and split-digraph arcs under the right parts of each word.

  • Tricky words are one click away
Click any word to mark it as ‘tricky’ and the sound buttons vanish, while the word changes to your chosen color. It mirrors how tricky words are often shown if your little ones don’t know certain sounds yet.

  • Read–draw–talk all on one page
The big drawing box turns a simple caption into a mini comprehension task. Your learners will need to read the sentence, visualize it, and then show their understanding (and some pencil control) through a picture.

  • Flexible layouts for different uses
Choose a single-caption landscape page for when you have more time to do a bigger drawing or you can go for a two-caption portrait sheet if you want to compare two sentences, or give a “Challenge” caption in the second half.

  • Perfect for class, interventions and home practice
Use it for whole-class phonics, small group work, at home, or even as a quick assessment (“read the caption and draw what you think is happening”). Because you can customize every caption, it grows with your learners across phases.

How To Use

Step 1 – Choose Your Layout

Pick from three layouts using the dropdown:

  • 1 caption – landscape – a single large section, great for a detailed drawing task
  • 2 captions – portrait – two stacked sections, handy for before/after or two related scenes
  • 4 captions – portrait – a 2×2 grid, perfect for sequencing activities or you wanted to make lots of small cards to hand out.

Step 2 – Name Line (Optional)

The name line is on by default. Toggle it off if you’re printing a class set and don’t need it, or if you want more space for the drawing box.

Step 3 – Choose Your Colors (Optional)

Two color pickers let you customize the look:

  • Border color – controls the drawing box border and page border (default black)
  • Tricky word color – the highlight color applied to any words you mark as tricky (default red)

Step 4 – Type Your Caption

Type your caption into the input field. Sound buttons are added automatically as you generate.

  • For single and double layouts, aim for 40 characters or fewer for the clearest sound buttons.
  • For the 4-section layout, aim for 35 characters or fewer.

For the 2 and 4 section layouts,  you’ll notice a Use the same caption on all sections toggle. Switch it on to type one caption that fills every section – handy for repeated writing practice or of you’re going to cut them up.

Step 5 – Generate

Hit Generate Worksheet to build your preview. You’ll see your caption rendered with sound buttons – dots under single sounds, dashes under digraphs and trigraphs, and arcs connecting split digraphs like a_e.

Step 6 – Mark Tricky Words (Optional)

Click any word in the preview to toggle it as a tricky word (words that your little ones haven’t learnt to decode yet). It’ll switch to your chosen tricky word color with no sound buttons underneath. Click it again to toggle it back. You can mark as many words as you like.

Step 7 – Add Your Own Sounds (Optional)

If your class uses a different sound system or you want to override how a specific word is broken up, click Add custom sounds to expand the panel, write any in separated by commas, then click Add. Split digraphs use underscore eg i_e. Your custom sounds will be used instead of the built-in database.

Step 8 – Download

Click Download Worksheet to save your PDF –  ready for your little learners to read and illustrate.

FAQ

Sound buttons are small circles or dashes placed beneath letters in a word to help children break down and blend sounds more easily. A dot marks a single-letter sound, a dash marks a digraph or trigraph (two or three letters making one sound), and an arc connects split digraphs like a_e. Children move from left to right, touching each button and saying each sound aloud as they go.

You type a short phonics-friendly caption, and the tool automatically adds sound buttons under each word – including digraphs, trigraphs, and split digraphs. It then generates a printable worksheet with a drawing box so children can read the caption and illustrate it. It covers most sounds up to Phase 5.

There are three layout options: a single-caption landscape page with one large drawing section, a two-caption portrait page with two stacked sections, and a four-caption portrait page arranged in a 2×2 grid – great for sequencing activities or cutting into individual cards.

After generating your worksheet preview, simply click any word to toggle it as a tricky word. The sound buttons disappear and the word changes to your chosen tricky word color. Click it again to toggle it back to normal. You can mark as many words as you like.

Yes. For the two-caption and four-caption layouts, there is a “Use the same caption on all sections” toggle. Switch it on to fill every section with a single caption. Handy for repeated writing practice or if you plan to cut the sections into individual cards.

Yes. Click “Add custom sounds” to expand the panel, type in your sounds separated by commas (use underscore notation for split digraphs, e.g. i_e), then click Add. Your custom sounds will override the built-in database for that session.

The worksheet builds segmenting and blending using sound buttons, grapheme-phoneme correspondence as children spot digraphs and trigraphs, reading fluency and confidence through short decodable captions, comprehension as they decide what to draw, and fine motor and pencil control through the drawing task.

For single and two-caption layouts, aim for 40 characters or fewer for the clearest sound buttons. For the four-caption layout, aim for 35 characters or fewer.

Every worksheet uses the Early Readers font, which has been specially designed to keep letters clear and simple for young readers and writers.

The tool is designed to work on a PC or laptop. If you’re on a mobile device, try switching to landscape mode first. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to access it on a PC or laptop for the full experience.
