Every good magic school needs proper identification! You can’t just wander into a potion lab off the street… These printable witch’s apprentice ID cards give your little learners their own official badge,  with a space to write their name, their age and draw (or stick in) their picture.

There are two sizes to choose from. One is standard lanyard size, so it can hang around their neck exactly like a real staff badge. The other is larger, giving those smaller hands a bit more room for writing and drawing. Both come in full color and in black and white, so they can decorate their own if they’d rather.

Pair it with our simple witch hat craft and the costume is almost there!

These Halloween badges promote some skills as well – pencil control while they write their name, storytelling as the play unfolds and plenty of negotiating over whose turn it is to stir! They’d be great in your dramatic play corner.

Time to get brewing!

What Skills Can Your Children Learn And Practice?

With these witch’s apprentice badge templates, your children are able to practice:

  • Writing and pencil control – As they write their name and age. The larger card size is especially good for children still developing their letter formation skills.
  • Fine motor skills – Cutting out the cards, coloring the black-and-white version and drawing their self-portrait all work those small hand muscles.
  • Imaginative and Dramatic Play – pretending to be someone else is how young children make sense of how the world fits together.
  • Social and communication skills – Dramatic play can be super collaborative. Checking each other’s badges, assigning roles and agreeing on the rules of the magic school all build turn-taking and cooperation.
  • Self-identity and self-awareness – Drawing themselves and writing their own details helps young children build a sense of who they are.

There’s color and black and white to choose from and I’ve made 2 sizes.

One is standard size, so it fits a lanyard (which could be cool!).

After that, all that’s left is to cut them out and color them in if needed.

Get Even More Out of These Trainee Witch ID Cards

This one has more mileage in it than you might think, here are some fun ways to get even more out of your witch’s apprentice ID cards:

Apprentice Training Academy

Make them earn the badge. Set up three or four training challenges around the room and hand over the ID card only once they’ve completed them all. You could choose some of our other Halloween activities – or set up some with things you have lying around. Balance along a broom handle laid on the floor, count backward from ten for the spell countdown, hop over the “toadstools,” go out and collect certain ingredients etc.

Silly Spell Casting

Get your apprentices to invent a spell using a target sound, so everything in the cauldron on Monday has to start with /s/. Snail, sock, spider, sandwich. If you want to follow it up on paper, these Halloween beginning sounds worksheets could be great!

Cauldron Counting Station

Fill a bowl (or a real cauldron if you’ve got one) with dried pasta, pom poms, shredded purple paper, buttons etc. Write simple potion recipes on cards and apprentices read the number, count out the ingredients and stir. This one-to-one correspondence pairs neatly with our witch number tracing worksheet if you want the number formation practice as well.

Something Magic for National Magic Day

October 31st isn’t only Halloween. It’s also National Magic Day, held on the anniversary of Harry Houdini’s death and celebrated by the Society of American Magicians ever since. Apprentices can put on a short magic show for the rest of the group. You’ll find plenty more dates worth building a session around over on our Special Day Calendar.

However your little witches use these apprentice ID cards, I hope the play is properly spellbinding!

Enjoy and let’s nurture those neurons!
