Fun fact – the word “astronaut” actually comes from the Greek words for “star” and “sailor,” making every little astronaut a tiny star sailor. How cool is that?

What Skills Can Your Children Learn And Practice?
With these astronaut badge templates, your children are able to practice:
- Writing and pencil control – As they write their name and age. The larger card size is especially good for children still developing their letter formation skills.
- Fine motor skills – Cutting out the cards, coloring the black-and-white version and drawing their self-portrait all work those small hand muscles. If you want to add some extra cutting practice, the rocket cutting strips make a great warm-up.
- Imaginative play and storytelling – Once they’re “officially” an astronaut, the stories and adventures they’ll go on build narrative skills, vocabulary and creative thinking.
- Social and communication skills – Dramatic play is naturally collaborative. Whether they’re checking each other’s badges at mission control or working together on a pretend spacewalk, these cards encourage turn-taking and cooperation.
- Self-identity and self-awareness – Drawing their own picture and writing personal details helps young children develop a sense of identity. It’s a small thing, but seeing their name on an official-looking card feels like a big deal.

Other Materials You’ll Need:
- Safety scissors
- Card stock or craft paper
- Some coloring pencils or pens
There’s color and black and white to choose from and I’ve made 2 sizes.
One which is standard size so would fit in a lanyard (which could be cool!).
And one which is oversized so they have a bit more room to write their names and draw their pictures!
After that, all that’s left is to cut them out and color them in if needs be.
Get Even More Out of These Astronaut ID Cards
These cards work brilliantly on their own, but there’s so much more you can do with them once they’re made. Here are some ideas to take the play even further:
Mission Control Check-In
Set up a simple “mission control” using a table or desk, a clipboard with some plain paper for writing and maybe an old monitor if you have one. One child plays the mission controller and checks each astronaut’s ID before they’re cleared for launch. It’s a lovely way to practice reading names and taking turns.
Astronaut Training Academy
Turn the cards into part of a broader astronaut training setup. Children earn their badge after completing a series of “training challenges” – these could be physical (jumping, balancing, crawling through a tunnel), academic (counting down from ten so they’re ready for the lift-off sequence, naming planets), or creative (drawing their rocket design). The ID card becomes a reward at the end!
Space Passport Stamp Book
Pair the ID card with a simple folded-paper “passport.” As your little astronauts visit different “planets” (stations around the room or garden), they collect a stamp or sticker at each one.
Pair with Other ID Cards for a Community Helpers Theme
If you’ve got a community helpers topic on the go, these astronaut cards sit perfectly alongside the construction worker ID cards and bus driver ID cards. Children can choose their role, make their badge, and switch jobs throughout the session. It’s a brilliant way to introduce different careers and the idea that grown-ups do all sorts of interesting things.
Sensory Space Station
Combine the ID cards with a space-themed sensory bin. Dye some rice black or use dried black beans for “outer space,” silver foil balls for moon rocks, small planet erasers or figurines etc. Children clip on their lanyard badge and explore the bin as astronauts on a research mission.
