Build a lunar lander craft printable space templates - cut and paste for preschool and kindergarten

Are your little learners ready to take a giant leap into creativity with this build a lunar lander craft?

This mission is designed for all those young astronauts our there.

But before we strap in to blast off, here’s a stellar fact to fuel your curiosity:

Did you know the first lunar lander to touch down on the moon was named Eagle? It made its historic landing back in 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and allowed humans to walk on the moon for the very first time. Imagine being the first to leave your footprint on the moon’s surface!

And here’s another cosmic tidbit: Lunar landers are specially designed to work in the moon’s low-gravity environment, making them look quite different from anything that travels on Earth. They’re kinda like the camper vans of space, but instead of roads, they navigate the vast, starry sky above us.

This simple space craft is your ticket to recreate one of humanity’s most awe-inspiring achievements. With just a few simple materials, we’ll craft our very own lunar lander, sparking conversations about the science and adventure of space exploration. It’s a hands-on way to explore big ideas, and maybe, just maybe, inspire the next generation of astronauts to reach for the stars.

So, grab your glue, scissors, and bravest explorers!

There’s a color and a black and white template – so your little learners can choose the colors and decorate their moon lander any way they desire.

And if you’re a teacher, this cut and paste space craft could also make a lovely activity for the classroom!

What Skills Can Your Children Learn And Practice?

When making this lunar lander, your children will have the chance to practice and develop some skills such as:

  • Cutting Skills – if you feel they’re ready, you can let them have a go at cutting out the pieces all by themselves – they’ll need to be careful and have good scissor control if they want to cut out the pieces neatly
  • Fine Motor Skills – when they’re sticking and picking up and moving the parts and placing them where they need to go
  • Pencil Control – if you print off the black and white version they can practice their pencil control and develop hand strength through coloring.

This simple craft will also give them a chance to practice their concentration and perseverance skills as they may find it tricky to place the pieces exactly where they want them to go.

How To Prepare This Build a Simple Space Craft

First you’re going to want to download the moon lander templates by download box at the bottom of the page – I’ve made a color and a black and white version!

Other materials you’ll need:

  • Safety scissors
  • Card stock or Craft paper
  • Some good glue
  • Some coloring pencils or pens

Once you’ve downloaded the templates, you’ll need to print them off onto paper or card.

Then, you can cut them out. Or if you’d like your children to get some cutting practice, you can let them have a go.

Then you can stick all the pieces together to make the lunar capsule.

It can be really nice to let you’re kids have a bit of free rein here and see if they can work it out – kind of like a puzzle.

If they’re struggling, the order I’d do it in is:

  1. Stick the small wings onto the back of lander’s body
  2. Stick the window on the body
  3. Stick the circles on the body (this may be a bit tricky – they can always draw them on)
  4. Stick the legs to the back of the body
  5. Stick the rocket booster on to the body over the top of the legs

(I expect you could have worked that out but I do like to be thorough…)

The finished one should look something like this- ta daa:

If you want to, you could always laminate the pieces before putting them together and use them as a puzzle. That way, the different parts would be kept nice and they can use them again and again.

After that you’re all done!

Let your kids practice their cutting and sticking skills in a simple and fun way!

But Wait… There’s Also A Black And White Build a Lunar Lander Template!

I’d love to see what they create!
